Stephen was born in Kingston - Upon - Thames, Greater London, in 1945. He
studied at the Yeovil School of Art, where he was awarded the Somerset
County Youth Art Exhibition Prize. He went on to gain the Royal Academy
David Murray Travelling Scholarship in 1965 through which he travelled to
Cornwall, France and Italy.
He has since had a prolific artistic career gaining further
qualifications, cumulating in an MA from Leeds Metropolitan University, and
awards including the 1998 Nina Hosali. Stephen has had numerous exhibitions,
both group and solo, spanning over 35 years. As well as being a regular
exhibitor at the Holmfirth Artweek since 1989, he has exhibited at the
Huddersfield Art Gallery, the Royal Cambrian Academy, and the Mall Galleries
in London, to name but a few.
His paintings are held in Private and corporate collections in Britain
and overseas. He has works held in the municipal collections of the Kirklees
Metropolitan Council, and the Wakefield City Art Gallery. While corporate
owners include the Paintings in Hospitals Collection, and Wetherspoons.
Stephen is predominantly a landscape painter whose work explores ideas of
space, time and changing moods. His skilful use of paint gives his work a
strong sense of control and yet retains a spontaneity which reflects the
scenes around Holmfirth where he now lives and loves to paint.
