David was born in
Barrowford and has lived in Lancashire all his life. It was his early
involvement in school projects - painting scenery and such - that enthused
him into wanting to pursue a career in art. However, after graduating from
Trent Park College in London David became a full time teacher and then his career moved into graphics in 1972.
Commercial art was the mainstay of his work, though he continued to teach in
Adult Education at Colne and Blackburn Colleges. He is now a full time
artist working from his studio near Barley at the foot of Pendle Hill.
David doesn't have a 'mission statement', "I just paint pictures or
things I like" he explains. His subjects vary greatly from Lancashire
landscapes and farming machinery to cattle and cats, but no matter what the
subject his work is recognisable through his distinctive style. Neither
abstract nor photo realistic David's paintings combine accuracy with bold
brush strokes, texture and a cacophony of colour. Working almost exclusively
in oil on board David creates a fairly realistic image which upon a closer
look reveals itself to be comprised from a myriad of random dots, dashes and
scratches. Before painting David heavily primes his board with a cross
hatching of paint to create a rough canvas effect; he then takes the unusual
step of using this board as a palette on to which to mix paint for another
painting. The build up of paint produces a surface of random textures and
colours, and once dry provides a unique and challenging surface on which to
paint. David's characteristic way of painting has been the subject of many
articles in publications such as 'The Artist', 'International Artist' and
'How Did You Paint That?', and he has also featured in 'Lancashire Life'.
David has exhibited widely, including at the Holmfirth Art week since
1999 and with the Manchester Academy of Fine Art, and has received many
awards and accolades along the way. In 2003,
2004 and 2005 he was the main prize winner at international exhibitions
organised by 'The Artist' magazine, and was the 'Peoples Choice' winner in
2003. In 2004 he was the 'Peoples Choice' at the Stockport Open and the Bamber Bridge Open. The Open Exhibition at Bamber Bridge has also seen David
win the 2004 Third Prize, and the 2005 Highly Commended and 'Peoples
Choice'. The Society for All Artists (SAA) awarded David 'Professional
Artist of the Year' and 'Best Landscape' in 2004. In he was the 2004 Garstang
Arts Society Second Prize winner, which he followed up in 2005
winning first prize. The last three years exhibiting at the Preston
Brownedge Open has seen success and in 2006 David was awarded the First
Prize.
David is a member of the Society of Feline Artists (SOFA), a Fellow of
the British Society of Painters (FBSP) and a regular exhibitor at the
National Exhibition of Wildlife Art, Liverpool.
