Rob
has been involved in art from a very early age, painting his first work in
oils
at the age
of just seven under the guidance of his father, George Miller, a prolific
landscape painter of the Ribble and Lune Valley during the 60’s, 70’s and
early 80’s. Since those days art in all its forms has been a significant
feature of his life both as an artist and in his other career in Young
Peoples Services. For the last 20 years the Visual Arts have taken up an
increasing amount of his day, resulting in his showing work regularly for 15
years, including six one person shows.
Following
his art studies at Bolton Institute some seven years ago Rob has developed
what he hope’s is an increasingly painterly response to his subject matter
which constantly returns to the open space, people and their habitation in
the in the uplands of the North West of England. Rob finds the Atlantic
climate, geology, ecology, history and culture of the upland areas
fascinating. He tends to explore
this
through working in short series, making open air sketches and compositions
and exploring his medium and changing style and methods of application as he
responds to the changing seasons.
As well as
England’s North West Rob has also painted the Hebrides, Cornwall and West
France. He also experiments with more figurative subjects and pieces
inspired by flowers and seeds.
Rob’s work
is influenced and referenced by the art of Paul Nash, Mark Rothko, Nicolas
De Stael, Ben Nicholson, and Turner. South West artists such as John Miller,
Kurt Jackson and Neil Pinkerton are also a great influence, and on a
Northern basis the excellent work of the Bolton painter James Naughton.
The work of
land based poets Ted Hughes and Philippe Jaccottet has also had an impact on
Rob’s paintings, influencing his vision and feelings towards his chosen
subject and approach to the landscape. |
