After leaving Manchester Art College, having gained an
Honours Degree in 3D Design, Sue went into Adult Education teaching Pottery,
a career she enjoyed for 26 years. It was during this period, along with her
colleagues and students, that Sue discovered Raku.
Raku is a method of ceramic firing, and was initially a
Chinese tradition. Later it was adopted by the Japanese as an art form
associated with their tea drinking ceremonies, and today the Raku method is
used world wide by both professional and amateur potters.
Sue finds the Raku process to be an exciting and
fascinating experience, and although she has been working in this way for
over 15 years Sue feels that she grasped only the tip of the iceberg. The
material itself provides much of the motivation for individual pieces, and
Sue enjoys experimenting to achieve different textures and colours.
Sue's other great source of inspiration is her love of
watching the antics and habits of animals and people. These wonderful pieces
beautifully capture character and personality, often resulting in humorous
observations of life. At terms these sculptures incorporate vessels and
containers which successfully marry the decorative with the functional.
Whether a 'fat lady that doesn't care' or a cranky cat,
Sues work never fails to raise a smile.
