Jan's interest in ceramics began when a friend posted an advert through her
letterbox over 22 years ago. The advert was for pottery classes held at the
local community centre where a new crèche facility was available, Jan had
two small children at the time and her friend thought it would be a good way
to get out and socialise. As it was only a couple of hours per week she
bravely gave it a try. She found everyone extremely friendly and was even
greeted by her old school teacher. Jan liked it so much she stayed for six
years. Since then she has gained a number of qualifications in ceramics
and design, accumulating in a BA Hons. from the university of Central
Lancashire in 2001.
Her inspiration is primarily derived from urban and rural landscapes,
particularly with regard to building sites and the changing environment. One
large project involved documenting the two year building process of a nearby
retail park. Comparing the former peat and boggy marshland to the new
commercial build which now stands in that space has resulted in simple
ceramic forms which record the story of the changes in the land. Jan has
endeavoured to create a progression in her work which reflects these
changes, so not only does the individual piece relate a story but several
pieces can interact to convey an entire picture.
Within her work Jan combines the strong geometric lines of the urban with
the flowing asymmetrical lines of the the natural creating contemporary
pieces with an abstract quality. Although Jan's work has a minimalist
character she has become known for her colourful glaze combinations, with
overlapping slips and bold linear makings being indicative of her
distinctive style.
