Douglas Holloway
Douglas trained at the Royal West of England Academy School of
Architecture, where considerable importance was given to classical
presentation and technique in watercolours. He also studied watercolour with
James Michie, whose inexhaustible enthusiasm and practical encouragement
inspired early confidence in handling this difficult medium.
For the last forty years Douglas has concentrated on the Lancashire scene
and Lake District, but also enjoys painting North Wales and Andalucia where
he visits each year. Although most of his work is created in the studio he
prefers to paint 'on the spot' when the weather permits! Through his work
Douglas aims to capture the illusive qualities of light and shade, using a
limited palette.
He first showed at open air exhibitions at Hampstead Heath, where he
lived, and at the Milbank, London. He has since exhibited at the Royal
Cambrian Academy, Gloucester City Art gallery, and the with Society of
Architect Artists to name but a few. Also as an Academician, elected in
1953, he exhibits annually at the the Royal West Academy, Bristol.
Over the years Douglas has earned much acclaim and has become widely
collected with works being held in Spain, Sweden, Canada, France, and
Swaziland. He has also been commissioned by private collectors and by the
Queens Lancashire Regiment who have his paintings abroad and in their HQ
Mess in Preston. But perhaps Douglas's greatest honour to date came when he
was requested to paint and present a painting to the Queen in 2002.
