Artist Information; David Ellis - Painter

David, born in 1940, always had an  interest and talent for art. He began to study painting at Huddersfield School of Art in 1959, and upon leaving in 1963 he divided his working time between teaching and illustrating educational books. In 1967 David embarked on his full time teaching career, and despite having little spare time he continued to paint profusely.

Since leaving teaching in 1993 David has become a full time artist exhibiting in numerous galleries, museums, and National Trust properties throughout the country.

David's stylised and vibrant paintings are inspired more from than technique than subject matter. His subjects can be wide ranging and are usually chosen because they compliment his way of working and choice of material. He likes the initial drawing in pencil to be quit strong and to look believable, and then colours them with ink and watercolour choosing a colour scheme as opposed to realistic hues. Throughout this process he mixes a medley of  materials and techniques to achieve his desired effect saying "in the end I like the viewer wondering how the picture was produced".
