Wendy
was 9 when she was first introduced to clay and fell instantly under it's
spell. However the class was cancelled after just two lessons due to a lack
of funds, but he pursued art in other forms. After school she took the
'sensible' route and followed a career in the Fire Brigade whist developing
her artistic tendencies in her spare time. Some years later Wendy had a
career change and began working alongside the Police, however this ended
after an accident which left her unable to continue working.
As a form of therapy Wendy joined a part-time pottery
class and was at last able to rekindle her love of clay. Unfortunately it
was not the happy ending she was hoping for. After a whole series of events
which included problems with the course, ill health, completing a Fashion
and Design course and getting married, Wendy found herself designing wedding
dresses! However, Wendy still lacked that feeling of fulfilment which she
had been searching for, and it was her husband who suggested giving pottery
one more try...
Muttering indifference Wendy took the plunge, again, and
embarked on another pottery course. At last her original joy was recaptured
and Wendy has not looked back since.
All Wendy's work is hand built using a variety of
methods such as coiling, slabwork, and solid form carving. These methods are
extremely time consuming but Wendy loves the process and the originality of
each piece that she creates. The firing process is equally involved and at
times includes the addition of porcelain fro extra strength, smoke and
sagger firing, burnishing and glazing.
Wendy's work is extremely varied, but she particularly
enjoys creating animals. Living in a semi rural area much of her inspiration
comes from the English countryside, but any animal can capture her
imagination. If she sees an endearing quality in an animal she wants to go
and make it straight away, creating pieces that are often quirky and
humorous, Whatever she makes Wendy enjoys the whole process, and hopes that
people like her creations as much as she enjoys making them! |
