Michael's beautiful and highly colourful jewellery is
made from acrylic and anodised aluminium, coloured with quality paints
together with gold and silver leaf.
His background in and training is in Fine Art Painting,
and within this medium Michael was always interested in the different ways a
painting might be presented beyond the expected two dimensional frame. He
found working in jewellery met this ambition perfectly as it enabled him to
use the colour and form in which he loves to paint, and yet gives him a
freedom of size and shape that is difficult to achieve in more conventional
painting. It is for this reason that Michael intends his jewellery to worn
as dynamic pieces of Fine Art.
As Michael's interests lie in fine art, as opposed to the
applied arts, he is driven by his sense of and sensibilities and avoids
working to pattern, a process which ensure the originality of each piece.
The aluminium pieces are anodised to accept dyes, they are then painted and
sealed so that the colour is fixed permanently. Michael sometimes works on
the top surface of his acrylic pieces to give a sense of depth; one may look
through it to the lower painted surface and appreciate the colours in depth
or through the sides where refracted light is seen.
Michael's unique approach to fine art has proved very
successful selling his work through numerous galleries and specialised shops
throughout England, Scotland and Wales. In June 2004 he was selected as
'Designer of the Month' by the Association of Contemporary Jewellery.
