Artist Information; Babs Taylor - Ceramicist
Babs was born in in Bolton in 1952, and now lives in Horwich close to the scenic countryside of Rivington. Her passion for pottery started in 1981 when. as a stressed Sales Rep, she joined an evening class with some friends "for a laugh" and was completely hooked by the end of the first term. Then, after several years of part time study in ceramics and design she embarked on a full time HND course at Preston Polytechnic (now Central Lancashire University), from where she graduated in 1990. After more study and ten years of teaching, Babs has now set up her own studio and is happy to be "potting" again.

She takes most of her inspiration from the natural environment, from colours, textures, and asymmetry. She wonders at the fragility of many of it's components; petals, seeds, peeling bark, wispy summertime clouds, butterfly wings...and the rugged solidity of others; rocks, stone, metal ore and the mighty oak. Babs loves the endless variations of the landscape, sometimes seemingly impressionist, especially at dusk and dawn, and enjoys the knowledge that some of the robust natural materials can be ground down and melted to make and decorate and decorate the most delicate of vessels.

Believing that pottery has no limitations except those that we impose ourselves, Babs enjoys experimenting and breaking the rules. She uses heavily grogged clay bodies to make delicate petal like bowls, makes tall vases thinner than she should dare, and often combines symmetry and asymmetry in the same piece of work. She also experiments with glaze formations and most of her pieces are enhanced with various different glazes and are fired several times before achieving the final result.

As well as being one our longest exhibiting artists Babs is also a regular exhibitor at Potfest, and the Harrogate Trade Fair. She also exhibited at the prestigious 'Art in Clay' 2003 exhibition at Hatfield House, Hertfordshire. As a member of the Northern Potters Association, the Craft Guild of West Lancashire, the Rivington Potters, and an associate member of the Craft Potters Association (CPA), Babs exhibits widely and has become a popular and respected ceramic artist.
